The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is seeking candidates for a position a software developer for the integration of the bioinformatics services at the (IB)2 Interuniversity Institute of Bioinformatics in Brussels (http://ibsquare.be). The (IB)2 is an interfaculty and interuniversity institute that brings together bioinformatics expertise at the VUB and Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the two main universities in Europe’s capital. The focus of the (IB)2 is on interdisciplinary research in a collaborative and open atmosphere, with expertise in machine learning, big data, rare diseases, oligenic disorders, network analysis, genome analysis, metagenomics and structural bioinformatics.
Job description: Over the last years, a range of servers and databases with a molecular focus on human health have been developed at the (IB)2. You will be responsible for bringing these resources up to the latest standards, especially in relation to the European ELIXIR project (https://www.elixir-europe.org/). This involves the integration and organisation of existing online bioinformatics servers and databases such as DynaMine (http://dynamine.ibsquare.be/), DIDA (http://dida.ibsquare.be/), DEOGEN2 (http://deogen2.mutaframe.com/) and Start2Fold (http://start2fold.eu/). In addition, you will have the opportunity to train bio-informaticians at the (IB)2 by spreading your awareness and expertise of the skills and knowledge you will have gained.
You will work directly with researchers at the (IB)2 and will have the opportunity to participate in their research through your work, for example by cross-linking data from currently separate servers. You will also connect to other sites in Belgium and Europe to link the updated (IB)2 resources to key ELIXIR infrastructures.
- A Masters degree in Computer Sciences, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
- Advanced skills and preferably experience in developing and maintaining web services and databases, including services (REST API).
- Excellent communication skills in English: within the context of this project you will be interfacing with scientists of different backgrounds.
- Experience in the area of bioinformatics and Python programming is a bonus
A full-time position for the duration of 1 year, starting as soon as possible. An extension of the position beyond this time is envisaged if financing is secured.
Please contact Prof. Wim Vranken (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have additional questions or to send in your application: submit a 1) cover letter detailing your background and interest in this position, 2) a full CV and 3) at least two references (with name, email, address, phone number). Applications will be considered until a suitable candidate is found.
